On Monday Oct. 3, the Mapleton-Chapman-Castle Hill Seniors started their 42nd year of operations. This organization for seniors began in 1974 with meetings and potluck lunches on Mondays during the school year.
Under the current leadership of Judy Kennard, president, the organization has changed its meeting schedule to only the first Mondays of each month. Other officers for 2016-2017 are Caroline Ballerstain, secretary, and Grenda Stevenson, treasurer.
At the first meeting, Judy Kennard and Grenda Stevenson put on a pancake breakfast for lunch, including baked beans, sausage and bacon.
Besides enjoyng lunch, the seniors share information about the well-being and events in the lives of other seniors in the three towns, learning about each other’s lives as well as those who might need some help or who have suffered a loss. Speakers come to the meetings frequently to teach everything from making homemade greeting cards to taking care of a loved one. Finally, each meeting is topped off with a rousing game of bingo.
The time spent together is a time of fun with serious underlying concern for family, friends and neighbors. Judy stressed that all seniors are welcome to come and join the group.
Ridge Runners supper
The Chapman Ridge Runners will have a baked potato and dessert public supper at the clubhouse in Chapman on Friday, Oct 21, from 4-6:30 p.m. There will be a variety of toppings for the potatoes and a super selection to choose from for dessert. Drinks are included at no extra charge.
The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Take-outs will be available. This is a public fundraiser for the club, so everyone is invited to attend and enjoy fresh Maine potatoes.
Christmas Craft workshop
The Haystack Historical Museum will be the site of the area’s first Christmas craft workshop scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22. The workshop will run from 1-3 p.m. at the museum on Main Street in Mapleton.
The workshop leader and instructor will be Lisa Shephard, who was the museum’s instructor at its spring tea in May. Lisa is well known as arts and crafts instructor who teaches many craft workshops in Maine and New England. She is volunteering to come and lead the museum’s Christmas craft workshop, which will consist of using kits to make homemade Christmas cards and a Christmas house decoration.

New Lion inducted
On Monday, Oct. 3, Mapleton Lions Club Secretary Terry Sandusky, along with Club President Allen Salo, inducted new Lion Jonathon Roark into the Club.
Lion Jon lives in Chapman and is retired from the Navy. Additionally, Lion Steve Eyler presented him with the Baby Lion Medallion, signifying him as the newest Club member, an honor he will hold until the next member is inducted.
Lion Jon has already worked on club projects including Mapleton Daze, the Maple Meadow Farm Festival and the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest.
