102 Years Ago – Oct. 8, 1914

A quartet of artists — The University City Entertainers, a quartet of artists of exceptional merit in their line, were booked for the Presque Isle Opera House. This company of star performers gave solos, trios, duets and quartets on the various instruments used, delightfully blended with stories, impersonations and readings.

Dental profession — Berry Brown, the well-known violinist, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Brown, a graduate of the Presque Isle High school and very studious in his habits, entered the dental department of Harvard College to prepare himself for the dental profession.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1941

Gray renominated — Granville C. Gray was renominated judge of the Presque Isle Municipal Court by Governor Sumner Sewall for a second four-year term. He was first nominated to this office in 1938.

China bound — Ernest Loane Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Loane, left for the West Coast, where he took a ship for China. The young Presque Isle aviator resigned his commission in the United States Air Corps, to be the first Aroostook boy engaged to instruct aviators in the Far East.

50 Years Ago – Oct. 13, 1966

New wing — A $1,403,000 expansion program for Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle was announced at a meeting launching a campaign to raise $600,000 of the cost by public subscription. The project, planned as a first step toward making Gould Memorial the area medical center, called for a new three-story wing, plus some smaller additions and extensive remodeling. A net increase of 45 beds as well as new departments of intensive care and physical therapy were part of the design.

Representing PI — Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce Executive Manager Mayes MacKenzie attended the annual meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives in Hartford, Conn., and was appointed honorary president of the Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1991

‘Cat XC competitors — The Presque Isle High School cross-country teams traveled to Old Town for the 43rd annual sectional meet. The invitational meet was attended by seven schools. On the boys’ side, the host Indians took top individual honors over the three-mile course with 18 points. They were followed by Bangor, 52; Brewer, 80; Caribou, 113; Presque Isle, 132; Stearns, 145; and Schenck, 162. Top finishers for the Wildcats were George Ferland, 15th, 17:47; Frank Bishop, 23rd, 18:47; Jamie Good, 28th, 19:33; Scott Kahkonen, 31st, 19:46; and Sam Rozynski, 35th, 20 minutes. The Lady Wildcats sent only one harrier to the meet, Sara Richard, who finished sixth.

Teacher honored — SAD 1 adult education teacher Brian Ross was presented with the Aroostook County Teacher of the Year Award for adult education by Jackie Genz, adult education director of SAD 1. Ross was presented the award for 19 years of teaching photography and graphic arts to adults.
