Volunteers wanted

I recently wrote an “In the City” article detailing the upcoming opening of our new community center. In it, I discussed the facility’s scheduled grand opening on Saturday, October 29th, 2016, our first official day of business on Monday, October 31st and the many different areas included in the new rec center.

Today I would like to touch on a very important aspect that can turn a simple building into a truly great community center – volunteers.

With a full-size gymnasium, walking track, senior center, teen center and a multi-purpose room, our new community center is just shy of 30,000 square feet. There is no doubt that within those walls there will be many new users, programs and events taking place. From that increase in activities, comes an increase in opportunities to give back to the community through volunteering.

Volunteering is a great way to share a skill, learn new skills, meet new people and give back to your community. To fully make the most of the new center, volunteers will need to play an important role. Opportunities for volunteers will include assisting with programs, supervising the teen center, aiding seniors, selling concessions, directing patrons at the front desk and simple housekeeping.
If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering, please let us know. Whether just a few hours per month or multiple days per week, we can put your time and effort to good use.

Volunteer applications can be picked up at the William V. Haskell Community Center for the next couple weeks and then available at the Sargent Family Community Center after that. For more information call 764-2545. Hope to see you at the new center.
