MADAWASKA, Maine — The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and distributed more than $6.5 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990, has again partnered with Brenda Davis, one of the state’s leading ending hunger advocates.
Davis is executive director of BBC Opportunity Center, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands of Maine people. She travels the state on foot to raise awareness about the problem of hunger in Maine.
The 15th annual Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking Tour is the largest yet, with the walk visiting a record-setting 97 credit unions in 90 different communities during the month-long tour. Maine’s credit unions will again make a contribution to a food pantry in each community it visits.
During the walk, Davis is focusing attention on the fact that hunger does exist in Maine, with 15 percent of residents are identified as food-insecure. She recently stopped by four NorState branch locations in Eagle Lake, Madawaska, Van Buren and Presque Isle.
Davis will visit food pantries, hunger organizations and credit unions during her walk, which will conclude with a special ceremony in Bangor on Monday, Nov. 21.
The credit union campaign is contributing more than $11,500 to food pantries throughout Maine. A food pantry in each community Davis visits will receive a $115 contribution, in commemoration of the 15th annual tour. The walk is expected to cover more than 1,600 miles, approximately 800 of that on foot.
