102 Years Ago – November 5, 1914
The Pierces Dramatic Entertainers — The first entertainment of 1914-1915 was given at Family Theatre Wednesday evening, Oct. 28, by the Pierces Dramatic Entertainers. The entertainment was of a high class in every way. The seats were well filled. Much credit due to Mr. Lee Ferguson for bringing such high class entertainment to town.
Amendment to the game law — The Fish and Game commissioner recommended the following amendment to the game law at the forthcoming session of the Legislature: first, a five-year close time on moose, and second, if the foregoing became a law, to recommend a reduction of the fee for non-resident hunters in Maine from the present $25 to the old $15 fee.
75 Years Ago – November 6, 1941
Col. Milliken promoted — According to communication received by William Milliken, Colonel Charles (Mort) Milliken, located at Fort Monmouth, NJ, formerly of Bridgewater, brother of the Presque Isle lumber merchant, was promoted by President Roosevelt to the rank of Brigadier-General. General Milliken, one of the county’s most famous personalities, commanded 10,000 troops at Fort Monmouth.
Dr. Swett elected — Dr. Clyde I. Swett, of Island Falls, was elected chairman of the Aroostook District of the Katahdin Council of Boy Scouts at the annual victory banquet staged at the Northeastland Hotel. The banquet program was under the direction of Perry S. Jackson, district Scout executive.
50 Years Ago – November 10, 1966
Service clubs donate $46,800 — The Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital Expansion Fund stepped up its pace with the announcement of gifts; $36,000 from the Presque Isle Rotary Club and $10,800 from the local Kiwanis Club, according to Dr. Clifford O. T. Wieden, chairman of the fund. The Kiwanis’ gift was to be used to establish the new dental clinic room and an examination and consultation room in the outpatient department room of the greater hospital, while the Rotary gift was to build and equip specific parts of the greater hospital to stand in the name of the club.
Sold most in Maine AAA — According to Richard Parsons, sales manager of the Maine Automobile Assoc., Marvin Tarbell of Presque Isle won the honors of leading the sales force of 18 members for the month of October, winning a cash award of $75.
25 Years Ago – November 6, 1991
PI Rotary’s newest member — Burtt Brown, Owen Smith and Ellis “Bud” Survant became the Presque Isle Rotary Club’s newest Paul Harris Fellows. A $1,000 endowment was made to The Rotary Foundation in each of their names., honoring exemplary values of service to profession and community. dAll were hailed by friends and business associates, who praised their accomplishments and past experiences during a special evening meeting at the Northeastland Hotel.
Club makes dough — Thirty members of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club joined forces with area pizza parlors to raise money for various community service projects. Club members collected nearly $600 in tips and proceeds as delivery persons during the annual Kiwanis Pizza Night.
