PRESQUE ISLE – Nancy Lee Smith, 61, passed away November 2, 2016, with her husband by her side at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Nancy Lee was born in Newport, VT, on March 29, 1955, daughter of the late Philip Bates and Marion (Robbins) Bates of Bradenton, FL (formerly of Derby, VT). Nancy Lee was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and was extremely dedicated to her children and grandchildren.
Growing up on a dairy farm in Derby, VT, she was an avid animal lover and her love for animals only grew as she grew older. Her life was never complete without a pet in her home, and she mothered many dogs, cats and birds throughout her life.
A graduate of North Country High School and Champlain College, she was passionate about helping children with special needs and dedicated 19 years of her life to Pine Street School. She enjoyed dressing up at the holidays and singing special songs to help put a smile on the kids’ faces. She had a deep love for her family and friends no matter how far away they were, and tried to stay in daily contact by the use of Facebook and her trusty iPad.
Those left to cherish her memories include her devoted husband of 36 years, McDonnell (Mac) Smith of Presque Isle; her son, Tyler Smith and his wife, Margaret of Waterville, and their three children, Katie Scarlett, Poppy Ballerina and Ruby Aurora; her daughter, Shannon Lee Smith of Gardiner, and her daughter, Avery Lee. She is also survived by her brother, Christopher Bates and his wife, Jeanne of Bradenton, FL; her sister, Laurie Wood and her husband, Tom of Barton, VT; her sister, Kimberly Corey and her husband, John of Farmington, CT; several nieces, nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved Shih Tsu dogs, Gracie-Love and Brindel.
A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016, from 6-8 p.m., at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle. Pastor Bud Fancy officiated a brief ceremony. Although Nancy did not spend her final days in Hospice, she was a supporter of Hospice Services. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Aroostook House of Comfort at P.O. Box 867, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Online condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
