Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Nov. 8 at the Aroostook Health Center and the guest speaker was Rotary District Governor Ginny Joles. A member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, Ginny began her one-year term on July 1.
District 7810 is comprised of 40 clubs — 30 in Canada and 10 in Maine. Ginny will visit each club because each one is important, both locally and as part of a world-wide organization. One of Rotary’s goals is the eradication of polio, which is very close to being met. Only a very few countries still have cases of polio diagnosed. Most clubs hold a Purple Pinkie Project in order to help raise funds for this project that, with matching grants from the District and the Rotary Foundation, are multiplied to enable more children to be immunized against this disease.
Ginny spoke about the district plan to raise awareness of Rotary, to build up club membership and about the various avenues of service used to help around the world. Those avenues of service include Club, Vocational, Community, International and Youth.
Youth services include Exchange Programs, Interact and Rotaract. Last year, there were 16 outgoing students from the United States and Canada that visited other countries while 17 students came to the U.S. and Canada to visit. This year, there will be 23 outgoing and 26 incoming. Interact and Rotaract are Rotary Clubs formed in area high schools and colleges.
