Beware holiday thieves looking for unlocked cars, Washburn police say

WASHBURN, Maine — Unfortunately, it happens every year around the winter holidays: thefts from unlocked cars.

The Washburn Police Department received two complaints this week about overnight thefts of loose change from unlocked cars around downtown Washburn.

“It’s common this time of year,” said Washburn Police Chief Roy Guidry. But the first couple of incidents can be “a reminder to keep your doors locked,” he said.

“It’s like they’re checking door locks, not breaking into them,’ Guidry said. “They go in and help themselves … mostly to loose change and small items. In the past, we’ve seen purses, cell phones, presents and gift cards taken.”
