102 Years Ago – Nov. 26, 1914
Property bought — Mr. H.B. Forbes bought the Guy V. Chandler property on Green Street consisting of a large six-tenement house and extra house lots.
Bushels of potatoes — The B&A Railroad delivered 369,825 bushels of potatoes to Northern Maine Junction during the week of November 15-21. The records showed that the shipments up to December predicted the fall off approximately 1,500 bushels as compared with the previous year.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1941
Newsman with Life — R. Irvine Gammon of Caribou, former Aroostook County editor of the Portland Press Herald, had been named an editorial associate of national affairs for Life Magazine. He served as Aroostook County editor of the Portland Press Herald for about three years.
PI Ritz agency — Approximately $8,500 in National Defense Bonds was awarded to Agency Managers and Salesmen in a nation-wide sales contest with Ritz Crackers in November, announced by Urban Kreidler, sales manager of the National Biscuit Company. In the Ritz sales contest of November the year before, the Presque Isle agency, serving The County, led the New England group. Max Ramsdell was the manager of the Presque Isle agency.
Member of Blue Cross — The Presque Isle General Hospital became a member of the Associated Hospital service of Maine (Blue Cross) announced by Florence Sharpe, RN, hospital superintendent.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 1, 1966
Maine Public gives — The largest corporate gift to date, a $25,000 subscription by Maine Public Service Co., had been added to the Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital Expansion Fund. A memorial unit in the building and an appropriate dedication will be decided later.
First contribution — Mrs. Mayes MacKenzie, treasurer of the Star City Humane Society, accepted a check for $25 from Walter B. Holder, president of the Presque Isle Barbershoppers, in the presence of Arthur J. Aube, secretary/treasurer of the singing group, and Mrs. Douglas Dingwall, president of the humane society. Gift was first given to the Society for its animal shelter without being solicited.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1991
Key to buy Casco — Key Bank of Maine received approval to purchase 12 branches of Casco Northern Bank from the Maine Attorney General’s office, including six in Aroostook County. But part of the deal hinged on Key trying to sell off one branch in Houlton and two others in the southern part of the state. The transaction was approved in its entirety by the FDIC, the United States Justice Department and the Maine Bureau of Banking.
Reusable packing — Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Aroostook officials announced that their distribution area, one of several in New England, switched from corrugated cardboard cases to reusable, plastic shells for transport and display of two-liter and 16-ounce products. This move cut out approximately 49,000 cubic feet of solid waste, which was otherwise disposed of in Maine landfills.
