MAPLETON, Maine — The third annual Little Wildcats Running Club Invitational One-Miler Race took place Nov. 19, 2016 at Mapleton Elementary School. Fifty two students in grades 3-5 from the SAD 1 elementary schools participated in and finished the race.

Little Wildcat runners met weekly during their recess with fourth-grade teacher/coach Kim Wright. The group worked on dynamic mobility skills and learned about pacing themselves while running. They also learned about the importance of supporting and encouraging one another.
The first-place finisher for girls was Olivia Locke of Mapleton Elementary School in 7 minutes and 33 seconds. Second place went to Rylee Jo Sylvia, also of Mapleton, in 8:00, and taking third was Charli Casavant of Zippel in 8:03.
On the boys’ side, Camden O’Donnell of Zippel came in first with a time of 7:34. Finishing just behind him was Jacob King of Mapleton in 7:34 and in third place was Brandon Porter of Zippel in 7:44.
The group wanted to do something a little different this year, so they invited participants to bring an item to donate to the Central Aroostook Humane Society and a huge collection was brought in.
Volunteers included members of the Presque Isle Middle School, Presque Isle High School and the University of Maine at Presque Isle cross country teams. Also, Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 187 was on the course cheering the runners on. All participants received a ribbon and a motivational mini-poster that read “Believe in Yourself! YES! You Can Do It!”
