Peter Belskis, who guided the Ashland girls soccer team to an undefeated season and its second Class D state championship in the last three years, has been named New England high school girls soccer coach of the year in the small school division by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The recognition was announced by the NSCAA last Tuesday afternoon in a news release.
Under Belskis, the Hornets went 14-0 during the regular season to earn the No. 1 seed in Class D North, then defeated Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill and Madawaska to win their third consecutive regional title.
Ashland then outlasted defending state champion Richmond 2-1 in double overtime to win the state crown. That marked the third straight meeting between those schools for the gold ball, with Ashland also winning in 2014.
The Hornets outscored their opposition this fall by a combined 135-9.
