Officers elected — The annual election of officers was held by Wade Woman’s Relief Corps when the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Fannie A. Forbes; Senior Vice President, Mrs. Delia Hardy; Junior Vice Pres., Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop; Chaplain, Mrs. Charlotte W. Reed; Treas. Mrs. Ferne C. Foster; Conductress, Mrs. Annie Grant; Guard, Mrs Martha Carter.
Prize winners — Masters Carroll Wilder and Rex Gould of Washburn, prize winners in the Boys’ Potato Growing Contests, enjoyed a free trip to Orono where they attended the Boys’ Potato Growing Association.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1941
Dempsey first local boy to win AP honors — Malcolm Dempsey, Presque Isle High School athletic star, was accorded a singular honor when he was listed in the first eight star individual sports performances in the annual Associated Press survey of the State. The honor came due to Dempsey winning the National cross-country run. The list included professional performers. Dempsey’s the first PIHS student to ever win a place in the Associated Press individual performance list.
200 Children received special Christmas packages — The local Red Cross chapter delivered special Christmas packages to 200 children throughout the city. Boy Scouts assisted in delivering the bundles. Each package contained a toy, piece of bruit and a bag of candy. Twenty families were sent special boxes of food and candy. Mrs. George W. Scott was chairman in charge of the Christmas project.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 29, 1966
Gift by Xi Nu — The Mark E. and Emily Turner Memorial Library received a $200 check to be used to buy a projector screen and phonograph equipment for the new library building, it was reported by Mrs. Anne D. Stimpson, head librarian. The gift was received from Roberta D. Griffiths, chairman of the service committee of the Xi Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Presque Isle, on behalf of Xi Nu Chapter.
Gould buys X-ray developer — Gould Memorial Hospital purchased an automatic developer for the hospital’s X-ray Department. With this piece of equipment, an unexposed X-ray film can be inserted into the machine and four and a half minutes later, the film will be completely developed and dried. The automatic developer can process up to 70 films per hour. Its capacity is adequate for any foreseeable hospital expansion. Not only does the machine greatly reduce the amount of time trained technicians have to spend in the dark room but the equality of the developed film is significantly improved, thus facilitating interpretation of the film.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1991
In appreciation — Nancy Dion, chairwoman of the Birch-Carmichael-Howard Tenants Council, presented a plaque to the staff of Pine Tree Legal in Presque Isle in appreciation for their legal assistance, support and friendship during the formation of the year-old council. The council was formed in January to represent residents in the Birch, Carmichael and Howard residential areas.
Bank appointed — Peoples Heritage Bank officials announced the addition of Timothy J. LaMar, Esq., as foreclosure attorney. LaMar, a graduate of the University of Maine, received his law degree from the University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law, and a member of the Maine Bar Association, the American Bar Association and AMVETS.
