SCHOLARSHIP WINNER — Northern Maine Community College student Lynn Kelly of Fort Kent recently won a state scholarship from the Higher Education Assistance Foundation. Accounting student Lynn Kelly of Fort Kent received the award during a legislative coffee held Friday, Dec. 16, at NMCC in Presque Isle, hosted by the Maine Bankers Association and Katahdin Trust Company.
During the event, when banking officials met with area legislators, Kelly was recognized as a scholarship winner. Annually, a student is chosen from each of five of the seven Maine community colleges (determined on a rotating basis) to receive the scholarship, along with students from the University of Maine system, Husson University, St. Joseph’s College and the University of New England.
The Foundation was established in the 1950s as a guarantee fund for student loans. The founders included a wide range of banks, businesses, community organizations and individuals. In 1990, the HEAF trustees initiated a scholarship program funded by the return on the original loan guarantee funds. The fund is now managed by the Maine Bankers Association in Portland.
