The UMPI basketball team lost both of its games at the Mariner Classic in Castine Friday and Saturday.
The Owls, now with a 5-6 record, begin play in the Can-Am Classic tonight at the University of New Brunswick-St. John.
UMPI lost to SUNY-Maritime (N.Y.) Saturday, 87-66. The Owls fell behind 9-2 early, but went up by six points before heading into intermission trailing by two. The Privateers made six of their 11 three-point attempts and outrebounded UMPI in the second half, 22-13, to win going away.
Derek Healy had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists and Kim Collins netted 14 points to go along with seven rebounds to lead UMPI’s attack. Maurice Harris notched 13 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Owls.
Tim Hoch scored 25 points to lead SUNY-Maritime.
Curry College dealt coach Mike Holmes’ Owls a 61-57 loss in Friday’s opener. It was the first win of the season for the Colonels after beginning with eight losses. The game featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes and the game was knotted with a minute to play, but Dashawn Williams of Curry hit a three-pointer to help give his team the victory.
Healy led UMPI’s offense with 18 points and teammate Nick Lenhard had 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Jordan Cook contributed 10 points and five boards.
The UMPI women took a 2-7 mark into their version of the Can-Am tourney at UNB-St. John, which began Tuesday and continues this afternoon.
