Maine State Police troopers from Troop F, based in Houlton, have responded to a significant number of car/deer crashes over the past couple of weeks in Aroostook County, the majority of which have been property damage only, according to Lt. Brian Harris of the MSP.
Harris said in a media release that each night has been bringing sporadic reports of car/deer crashes and also reports of deer that have been struck by vehicles and left on the roadway.
“Maine State Police Troop F is encouraging motorists to use extra caution when traveling, especially at dusk and night when visibility is limited and the deer activity is more prevalent along the roadways,” he stated. “It’s the time of year that deer are gathering in the fields and woods along the roadways and crossing busy roadways while they herd together and search for food.”
Though the deer crashes have taken place at various locations throughout The County, crashes have been most prevalent on I-95 in the Sherman/Island Falls area and also on Rt. 1 in the Littleton/Monticello area, Harris said.
Motorists should use slower speeds when traveling at night and pay extra attention to the shoulders and sides of the road for deer activity.
