Buried — A man employed by the Houlton Sewer Co. was buried by a cave-in on Kendall Street where the company is putting in a main, but no serious injury resulted as he was promptly rescued. Library report — Report of Cary Library, September 1907. Whole number of books loaned, 1,386. New patrons, 47. Fines collected, $11.96. In the quarter ending Sept. 30, 800 people borrowed 4,245 volumes, $19.25 was collected in fines, 370 new books were added to the library making a total of 5,200 books.

Fall fruits — The pictured bunch of raspberries were picked Sunday, Oct. 13 by Frank Jarvis on the Hagan Farm at Carys Mills attesting to the wonderful fall weather this section of Aroostook County has been experiencing this year. Up to that date, no killing frost had been reported.
Club work — The Houlton Community Golf Club recently voted to expand their facilities at Nickerson Lake by clearing land this fall in preparation for a beach, wharf and float along a 60-foot stretch in front of the club.
John Maines is the chairman of this committee, assisted by Leighton Fortier, Harold Berry and Dr. Robert Goodwin.

Elections – There are five positions to be filled at the county level during the Nov. 2 general election. The most interesting race, at least in southern Aroostook, is between Edgar Wheeler and David DeMerchant, both of whom are seeking to replace retired Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Honored — F.A. Peabody Co. recently honored Vera Mitchell of Sherman Mills in recognition of 25 years of service with that company. Mrs. Mitchell entered the insurance business in 1957 and has operated the Mitchell Insurance Agency, a division of F.A. Peabody, since that time. She services over 600 customers.

FINAL INSPECTION — In October 1982, this crew was making a final inspection for the completion of reconstruction on River Street. The project involved new water, sewer and storm drains, a new base for the street and a new asphalt surface. Making the inspection were, from left: Roy Brockway, chief engineer for Hatfield Randall Associates; Phil McCarthy, town manager; Kilburn Swallow, project engineer for Hatfield Randall; David Dow, superintendent for Steelstone Construction; Charles Upton, director of community development for the town of Houlton; and Ralph Cleale, director of public works for Houlton.
