Several weeks ago I made mention that I would be willing to spend an hour behind bars (in a dog kennel at the shelter) for every $20 donated. We did have donations and I wanted to let you know that I will be “doing my time” for the animals shortly. Logistically, I could not do it sooner as we were full of dogs, every cage was full, and then when they found homes and we had a spare cage, the
cages had to be shut down and the dogs put back in the old building temporarily. This was to allow our contractor to set another layer of poured flooring in the dog room so the water would drain more efficiently.
This material has to set and cure for at least a week, and he still has to come back because some curious cat decided to take a walk across the newly poured floor and leave her “mark,” so the floor still isn’t 100 percent finished. Once the floor is dry, there is a spare kennel, and once we get the upcoming dance finished, I will be spending time in a dog kennel to raise money for the shelter.
Anybody who would like to contribute to this little project is more than welcome. My point in doing this, even more than earning money, is to bring attention to the plight of the animals in our care – abandoned, neglected, and then brought to the Shelter, many of these animals spend months “behind bars” – they don’t have a good book to read or TV to watch or a fireplace to lay in front of. They can’t go out in the back yard and chase a Frisbee or sit at your feet and wait for a special treat, they just sit there, day in and day out, waiting for a home. When I go there, I won’t bring a comfortable chair, a good book, or a piece of pizza. I will sit in a cage with a bottle of water and a soft blanket, the staff will walk me just as often as they walk the other “dogs” and I’ll know just how it feels – and then I’ll tell you all about it.
In the meantime, we have fun things to do and talk about. Remember that the weekend of Oct. 27, we are having our dance at the Oakfield Community Center. Supper is at 6 p.m., dance is 7:30 to 11 p.m., with some of the best entertainment available in the country. You just can’t miss it.
If you would like to contribute to the evening’s success, we need pumpkin pies, rolls and biscuits, main dishes and salads, so let us know if you can help and we’ll put you on the list.
Remember to come in costume if you would like to be eligible for a prize and bring a little extra money to bid on some of the exciting items that will be auctioned off during the evening.
Hopefully by then we’ll also have the tickets for the special shopping night at the Aroostook Centre Mall and you can purchase those also. Just $3 grants you access to an exciting evening of discounted shopping, prizes, live entertainment and one of the largest craft fairs in the area.
Following the dance we will be working on the “homes for the holidays” event to be held downtown in December. Stay tuned for more information on that project.
Thank you all for your help, we have so many who volunteer time, who donate blankets, food, towels, who make hand crafted items for us to sell or auction, we are just so very fortunate and we appreciate each and every one of you.
Take care and remember to adopt from your local Shelter.
