HOULTON — Oct. 28 marked the date the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886. To celebrate the occasion, SOAR of Houlton sponsored a Lady Liberty Coloring contest for students in the Houlton area. More than 200 students from Houlton Southside School, Hodgdon Mill Pond School and the Greater Houlton Christian Academy participated.

Along with the coloring contest, the students were encouraged to discover more about this American symbol of liberty with a sheet of fun facts and questions to discuss in the classroom.
Students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 3 competed in Division 1 with the winner being Jennah Carver, a student in Mrs. Hemingway’s third grade class at GHCA.  Students in grades 4 – 6 competed in Division 2. The winning entry was colored by Kerrisue Spellman, a fourth grader in Mrs. Adams’ class at the Hodgdon Mill Pond School.
Connie Barry, president of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Chester F. Briggs American Legion Post 47 assisted with the judging. Each of the winners was awarded a certificate and a $50 US Savings Bond.
SOAR of Houlton is a group of volunteers whose mission is to Support Our American Recruits, those active and veterans. Each participant in the coloring contest was given the option of sending his or her entry to an active American soldier serving as a guardian of liberty, and a majority of the students chose to do so.     SOAR is currently planning campaigns and projects for the upcoming holiday season.
