At Dyer Brook, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors finally broke into the win column, overtaking visiting Hodgdon, 44-40.
“Our game plan was to press and make their guards uncomfortable and try to get some fast break points off our press,” said SACS Coach Jessica Porter. “I felt pretty good at the beginning of the game when we had a slight lead and had Hodgdon in the double bonus early in the second period, but then inexperience took over and we started to foul and get rattled ….”
The game was close throughout, as Hodgdon held a 20-14 halftime lead. The Lady Warriors turned the corner in the third period, holding a slim 31-29 advantage, as they held off Hodgdon in the final period.
For Hodgdon, Coach Olin Quint said this was a typical game for his squad.
“Again, free throws, layups, and put backs were not our friend,” he said. “We did play good defense as we caused them to turn the ball over 33 times.”
Porter said that her girls need to continue to play smart, disciplined basketball to turn the season around.
“I think right now, it is more of a psychological thing and once we overcome that … making better choices offensively and defensively will come,” she said. “A win is always good for the morale of the team. We have lost a few close ones, so coming out on top in one will give the girls a boost of confidence. They know we have a lot to work on yet, but they are working really hard in practice and working really hard to maintain a positive team attitude.”
Brittany Charette was the decisive factor in the second half of the game, as she scored nine of 13 points.
