Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing
Hello everyone! And how is your day? Keeping warm? That is the thing to do. Still snowing here after starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Wondering how many inches of that white stuff we will have.
Althea Lloyd is still a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital. The girls on the second floor are missing Althea. Hope you are getting better, friend.
Priscilla Brownlow is home from a Presque Isle hospital after surgery. She is doing very well.
Received a Gazette from RSVP a few weeks ago. Always glad to receive these, so much information in one.
One of my friends called the number I suggested in stopping calls printed a few weeks ago, but found out you need a credit card and $9! Now that’s a surprise. Thanks for relating this information to me.
The inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama is all the news on television. Let us pray for the next president, it is such a tremendous job.
Are you ready for the digital change in television? If not, you had better find out about it. If you have a regular television and are not supplied by an antenna, you will need no change, or that is what the local cable company told me.
Also, I read that new drivers’ license law is now in effect. One is to require motorists to prove they are living in the United States legally if they want to obtain or renew a driver’s license. They can do this by providing a tax form, a pay stub, a utility bill or other similar documentation. The second part of their requirement is they must prove they live in the country legally. They must show a birth certificate or a passport; other elements include a baptismal certificate a religious record or tribal record showing name, date of birth and place of birth. The reason for the change is to tighten the driver’s license requirements.
Russell Socoby is back at his apartment here at the plaza. He was a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital.
I had a nice visit with my daughter, Kathryn Hall of Bangor on Sunday.
It’s been quiet these past few days. If you want to leave some news, just call me or place it under my door. The number to call is 532-2125.
The thought for the day is: “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” (Psalm 145:8)
Have a good week and remember to keep warm.

Tops ME 233
By Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Chapter 233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Jan. 16 meeting. The ladies had roll call and there were 12 ladies present including three KOPS.
Joyce Estey was present to greet everyone and Elinor Harvey was the official greeter. Lois Downing led us in exercises.
The loser of the week was Brenda Lacostic with runner-up Aileen Smith.
The mystery winner was Joanne Scott and Lois Downing won the 50/50.  The skinny dish was held over.
Denise Kinney solicited the ladies for the bead contest. Some had to return them from last week and some were gained. We all drew new partners for the week.
Joyce Estey read some quotes from the latest TOPS magazine relating to rules and awards on TOPS and KOPS. Joyce’s program consisted of facts on eggs.
If your doctor told you not to eat eggs, please dismiss any of the facts. Eating eggs may reduce the risk of cancer. Eggs are 30% of RDA requirement for a day. Those eating eggs reduced their weight by five times than those eating bagels. 72 calories are contained in eggs. Look for organic, pasteurized and omega 3 enhanced eggs.
The next meeting will be Friday, Jan. 23. The weigh-in time is 8-8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9 a.m.  and ending an hour later. Everyone is welcome.
If you wish more information, you may contact Betty Ivey at 532-9653 or Charlotte Marley at 757-8483.

   Happy Losers
By Shirley Sides
The Happy Losers meeting was held Jan.14 at the Congregational Church in Island Falls. We opened our meeting with our pledge and roll call. Hilda Clukey was the loser of the week and runner-up was Mary Shaw. Glady Corneil was the loser of the month for December.
We had nine ladies weigh-in and nine attended our class.
Our secretary and treasurer gave reports for the week.
Jackie Pratt and Joanie Sides led the program and their topic was on ‘what to eat or not to eat.’ They suggested that soy, chocolate, nuts and eggs should be included every day.
Please feel welcome to come to our group. Our meetings are always interesting. The weigh-in is every Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information.
