On Tuesday, Jan 13 at 8:30 a.m., the Houlton Police Department and the Houlton Ambulance responded to a call of a drug overdose at 60 Military Street.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found 26 year-old, Clayton Codrey, lying on the floor beside his bed deceased. Attempts had been made by a family member to resuscitate Codrey prior to the arrival of first responders.
Police officers at the scene determined that Codrey ingested between 10-20 doses of Xanax earlier in the day. They learned later that he had also taken up to 100 milligrams of methadone in liquid form at approximately 5:30 p.m., on the evening of Jan. 12.
Codrey went to bed at approximately 8 p.m. that Monday night. Codrey’s girlfriend, Durene Jones, 39, of Houlton found him to be unresponsive at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday and called 9-1-1, approximately one hour later.
With the assistance of MDEA, Houlton Police processed the scene and conducted several interviews of people who had been present that morning and during the previous night in Codrey’s apartment.
Codrey was transported to the Medical Examiners Office in Augusta for an examination. The police expect to receive a toxicology report in two to three weeks.
As a result of the investigation, David J. Goodall, 25, of Cary, has been charged with aggravated unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs and murder.
Goodall is presently incarcerated at the Aroostook County correctional facility in Houlton pending arraignment.
Brandy Hartt, age 21, of Benedicta has been summonsed for unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs. She is currently in a hospital located in eastern Maine.
Pending the toxicology report, Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin states that an additional arrest is expected. The matter is expected to be brought before the next grand jury.
Asselin stated that Codrey’s death was unfortunate and tragic but most important, it was totally preventable. He states people have to be held accountable for their criminal actions, particularly when there is injury or death involved.
Asselin credits the assistance of MDEA special agent Shawn Gillen, the cooperation of the district attorney’s office and the efforts of Detective Carolyn Crandall, Officers Jared Sylvia and Kristin Calaman in putting this case together quickly and efficiently.
