Cougars undefeated

    The local high school baseball and softball seasons are winding down, but plenty of action was seen on the fields last week.     On Monday, the Katahdin Cougars remain undefeated at 8-0 with a 10-0 win over visiting Lee Academy.
    Cougar ace Andy Kay pitched a no-hitter to carry his team to victory, striking out 14 and walking only one. Backing Kay’s cause, Josh McGraw doubled twice and singled, while Evan McCarthy knocked in three runs with two singles. Andrew Hawkins singled twice and drove in two runs, while Josh Guiggey doubled and singled.
    The score was closer than indicated, as Katahdin led 3-0 through six innings before erupting for a seven-run sixth.
    Last Thursday in Stacyville, the Cougars raced by Hodgdon, 19-1, scoring nine runs in the first inning to win in five innings.

    Katahdin’s McGraw hit a three-run double, while Ethan Qualey doubled and singled. Kay and McCarthy each hit two singles.
    For Hodgdon, Ryan Wellington and Eric Ryan each singled.
    The Cougars raced away from Schenck, 10-1 last Tuesday.
    Kay singled twice and drove home three runs for the Cougars, while Hawkins added a double and a single and Kolby Gallagher tripled.
     In Hodgdon, the visiting Central Aroostook Panthers took home a 15-3 win on Monday.
    For Hodgdon, Zach McCarthy had a run-scoring single.
    On Monday, the Katahdin Lady Cougars were overtaken 16-12 by visiting Lee Academy.              Katahdin’s Lacy Pelletier singled twice and had two RBIs and Myah Smallwood singled twice.
    Last Thursday, the Lady Cougars pulled by visiting Hodgdon, 19-14.
    Amy Grant hit two doubles, a single and knocked in three runs for Katahdin, while Lacey Pelletier doubled, singled and knocked in a run.
    Taylor Hovey and Dayna Tidd each hit a double and a single for Hodgdon.
    On Monday in Hodgdon, the Lady Hawks overpowered Central Aroostook, 17-14, as Haley Quint tripled, doubled and singled twice to bring in three runs. Taylor McGary doubled twice and singled twice to drive in run for the winners.
    Last Tuesday in Fort Fairfield, the Hodgdon teams both lost.
    In boys’ action, the Tigers won 10-4. Jake Tidd and Levi Scott each hit two singles.
    On the girls’ side, the Lady Tigers beat Hodgdon, 18-8 in six innings. Hodgdon’s Whitney Wallace doubled and singled twice, while Hovey doubled and singled.
    The Caribou Vikings scored in every inning to shorten the game to five innings against the visiting Houlton Shires on Monday.
    Cameron Anderson threw a five-inning one hitter, spoiled by Houlton’s Corey Woodworth.         Last Wednesday, the Presque Isle Wildcats used three run-scoring bunt singles in the seventh to overtake Houlton, 9-6.
    Presque Isle’s Ethan Braley hit a two-run triple to spark a four-run sixth for the Wildcats to pull his team to within a run, 6-5. The Shires took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third and then scored in the fourth and fifth innings for a 6-1 advantage.
    Brothers Ian and Porter Gervais each had two singles and drove in a run for Houlton.
    In softball action on Monday, the Caribou Vikings edged visiting Houlton, 5-4.
    Houlton’s Nikki Eastman fired a five-hitter and backed her own cause with two singles.
    Last Friday, the visiting Lady Shires fell to Calais 9-2. Erika Lackey led Houlton with a double and a single, while Eastman hit an RBI-single.
    The Lady Shires fell to visiting Presque Isle last Wednesday, 6-2.
    Presque Isle’s Krista Coffin fired a four-hitter. Lainey Herring doubled for Houlton.
    The Southern Aroostook Warriors committed 12 miscues in Monday’s game against Ashland, as they fell 19-9.
        Cody Robinson led SACS with a home run, double and single. Dillion Boulier and Darrin Flewelling each doubled and singled.

    Last Thursday, the Warriors routed host East Grand, 22-1.
    John Keyes drove in four runs on two singles and a double, while Steve Grant had three doubles and two RBIs for the Warriors. Travis Smith hit three singles to drive in two runs, while Tyler Robinson added three singles.
    For East Grand, Abe Brittain rapped a run-scoring single.
    Last Tuesday, the Central Aroostook Panthers defeated visiting Southern Aroostook, 9-1 behind righthander Logan McLaughlin who fired a no-hitter, striking out nine, walking two and hitting a batter. McLaughlin gave up a run in the fourth on a walk, stolen base and sacrifice fly by SACS’ Grant.
    The Lady Warriors had no problem with visiting Ashland, winning 15-3 on Monday in Dyer Brook.
    The Lady Warriors jumped to a 6-0 first-inning lead and led 9-1 after the third.
    Brittany Charette hurled a five-hitter, striking out four and walking four. Backing her from the plate were teammates Olivia Raymond, who stroked two doubles, a single and drove in three runs; Shelby Hartin doubled, singled twice and knock in five runs and Janel Rockwell collected three singles and an RBI.
    Last Friday, the Lady Warriors rallied by visiting Fort Fairfield, 12-3.
    The Tigers led 3-0 until the Lady Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Shelby Hartin drove in two runs. SACS then opened the game up with a six-run fifth inning capped by a three-run sixth for the win.
    Evangeline Goodall pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine batters and walking eight, while sister Liz had two singles, a triple, and an RBI. Kaitlyn Sommers tripled, singled and brought in a run for the Lady Warriors. Hartin had two singles and drove in four runs for the winners.
    Last Wednesday, the Lady Warriors overpowered CAHS, 26-12 in five innings.
    Liz Goodall hit three doubles, two singles, and drove in six runs to power Southern Aroostook, while Jasmine Rockwell had three singles, a double and drove in five runs. Sara Crandall posted a triple, a single and knocked in four runs for the Lady Warriors.
    In girl’s action, the Lady Warriors won 23-2 over East Grand last Thursday.
    Charette hit four singles and knocked in three runs, while Liz Goodall homered, doubled and singled to drive in two runs.
    Liz Gilman paced the Vikings with a single and a two-run double.
    On Saturday, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy Lady Eagles used an error on a stolen base in the top of the seventh to bring in the winning run, 10-9 over Wisdom.
    Kiki Smart and Elizabeth Little had two singles apiece for the Lady Eagles.

LEAD OFFS – In the top photograph, Greater Houlton Christian Academy’s McKenzie Burns leads off third base, as East Grand’s Abe Brittain holds the bag. At right, the Eagles’ Jaron Gray holds his glove up for a target while Dustin Morse of East Grand gets a lead. The Eagles won each game of the doubleheader in five innings by the mercy rule, 13-3.

    Last Friday, the Lady Eagles split with host Central Aroostook in a double header. In the first game, the Lady Panthers won the slugfest 24-13, while the Lady Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh to win the second one, 16-15.
    In the first game, GHCA’s Melissa Parker tripled and doubled to knock in three runs, while Smart had three singles and an RBI and Megan Carroll added two singles.
    In the second game, the Lady Eagles rallied for a six-run seventh themselves to pull out the win when Mikayla Wiley scored the game-winning run on an Amber Michaud infield single.
    Michaud finished the game with three singles, while Kasi Parker tripled and singled to drive in two runs. Emily Little added three singles and two RBIs.
    The Central Aroostook Panthers swept Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 6-2 and 19-2 in last Friday’s action in Mars Hill.
    In the first game, the score was tied 2-all until the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead en route to the win.
    For the Eagles, Jaron Gray hit a run-scoring single and Jeff Campbell added two singles.
    In the second game, the Panthers scored in each inning, taking a 10-0 lead after three.
    For the Eagles,  Ethan Brady hit two singles and drove in two runs.
     Last Friday, the Woodland Dragons shut out East Grand, 15-0. Andrew Gilman, Abe Brittain and David Cropley all doubled for East Grand.
    In girl’s action, the Lady Vikings fell 19-0 to Woodland.
    At Woodland, junior Shelby Bassett threw a perfect game, striking out 11, before it was halted by the mercy rule.
