100 Years Ago-June 9, 1909
Aroostook Times

    White Settlement — At a church business meeting here last week it was voted to have preaching every Sunday afternoon during the summer and fall.     Drew’s Mills — The box supper at the Drew Schoolhouse Friday night was a success and the money is to be used for curtains and pictures for the schoolroom.
New principal — Carl Holman of the Class of 1909, Bates College, has been elected principal of the Presque Isle High School at a salary of $1,200.
Newly painted — The painting of the Congregational Church has been completed and it presents a very neat appearance with its white paint and green blinds.


75 Years Ago- June 7, 1934

State Commissioner of Education — Bertram E. Packard speaking before the Ninth District of the Maine Federation of Women’s Club scored municipalities that refused to employ married teachers or that refused to hire teachers who are not residents of such municipalities. He called the attitude “provincial.”
Post Office — Amount approved for the Houlton building reduced to $95,000 — a final approval depends on recommendations made by Treasury and Post Office Departments.
Island Falls — Honor parts for Island Falls High School are, Ken Young, valedictorian; Miss Gerow, salutatorian; Miss Sherman, first honor essayist and Miss Schurman, second honor essayist.

50 Years Ago-June 4, 1959

Memorial Day — Rain forced the holiday program indoors to the Methodist Church. The Houlton High band played several selections and the National Anthem was sung by Irene Bell. Flanders Field was recited by Roberta Guy and the Gettysburg Address delivered by Charles Fortier.
Air Fair — A detachment of U. S. Marines from the Naval Air Station in Brunswick will participate at the July Air Fair at the International Airport at Houlton. The 16 troops will ‘attack’ off the runway complete with exploding demolitions. The attack will continue for 25 minutes. The troop will arrive by helicopter. The U. S. Marines have not launched an attack in this area since they assaulted the British in 1789.
Jaycee Road-e-o —Herbert Gentle, winner of the 1957 Jaycee Road-e-o won the 1959 contest and the right to represent Houlton in the state finals in Rockland. Kevin Cowperthwaite was second and James Donald was third.
New Limerick — Mr. and Mrs. Herman Estabrook accompanied the French Class of Ricker Classical Institute on a trip to Quebec City over the weekend. Their daughter, Sharon was one of the class members..
Smyrna Mills — Mrs. Ethel Anderson substituted at the Roosevelt Grammar School Thursday and Friday for the fifth grade teacher, Dawn Larlee, also on Monday for the sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Leila Henry.

New teachers — SAD 29 has hired Beth Ludwig and Lynn Oliver for the next school year.
Ballroom dancing — Ron and Fran Clukey are teaching area residents to ballroom dance. They have entertained for several years at nursing homes, senior citizens groups, talent shows and benefit performances.
Sherman — ‘Save the bandstand’ has been initiated by a Sherman Mills church group. The bandstand was built in 1910 and one of the few remaining landmarks in Sherman.
Farmington scholarships — Three area students earned scholarships, Kim Alane Clark, Nancy Bailey and Ann Putnam.
Bridgewater — Teacher, Kim Anderson took her second grade class to the Post Office and Clowater’s Store. The mail process was explained and each student received a commemorative stamp.
Guest speaker — Game Warden, John Fowler spoke to ecology students at Katahdin High School. Fowler’s job is diverse and a typical day could include, beaver problems cause road flooding, moose hit by car, deer hit by car and missing child in the woods.
