100 Years Ago-June 16, 1909
Aroostook Times

    Amity — The first dance of the season at Mooers Grove Friday evening was attended by a large crowd and everybody enjoyed themselves.
    Crescent Park — A.T. Putnam is building a fine cottage on the North Shore of Nickerson Lake. The cottage will be ready for occupancy soon and will be one of the most attractive cottages on the lake.
    Town walks — Work is now in progress placing concrete walks in front of several business blocks of the town. The new walks will be much appreciated and will add considerable to the general appearance of the town.
    Drew’s Mills — Owing to good weather all the farmers have their planting done and they are now busy working on the State Road.

    Ricker — The 86th annual Commencement Exercises of Ricker Classical Institute featured Charlotte Marley as valedictorian and Edgar Martin as salutatorian.
    Houlton High — Leah Dickinson gave the Valedictory address and Jean B. Wilder gave the salutatorian address.
    Bar lifted — Governor Louis Brann lifted his order of the June 1 closing of all streams in the State to fishing and prohibiting smoking and building of fires out-of-doors.
    Temple Theatre — Plans for remodeling of the Temple Theatre have just been completed and work will begin at once to make the is popular showplace one of the finest theatres north of Boston. An entire new front finished in gold bronze and blazing with hundreds of electric lights will make this an attractive spot during the evening hours.


50 Years Ago-June 11, 1959

    Houlton — Interstate highway crews will map the new interstate road this summer. The terminus of this highway will be at the U.S. Canadian line in Houlton and is expected to be completed in 10 years.
    East Grand — New hope for East Grand Lake salmon fishermen was voiced this week by Game Warden Erwin Bonney, who said that salmon were being caught. The salmon are darker in color this spring than the normal bright silver.
    Tree Warden resigns — Ora L. Stockford, town tree warden for the past two years has submitted his resignation, with plans to move to Indiana. Stockford has worked for Houlton for the past 20 years. He has treated over 500 of the 1500 elms in the residential section during the Dutch Elm disease devastation.
    Half-gallons — The Houlton Farms Dairy has completed installation of new equipment which will make available to residents of this area for the first time, milk packaged locally in the popular half-gallon cartons.
    Monticello — Graduation exercises of the eighth grade will be held June 14. Speakers are as follows, Valedictory, Janet Williamson; Honor Essay, Caroline Prosser and Salutatory, Brenda Nason.

NEW GRADUATES — Five non-commissioned officers from Battery B, Houlton’s National Guard Unit graduated from the NCO Academy in Caribou and the quintet received the highest grades of all NCO’s attending. Sgt. Duffy was the high man. Shown in front, from left, Sgt. Lysten Ivey, Sgt. Lawrence Haggerty and Captain Philip Jenkins, CO of Battery B. In the rear, Sgt. Lawrence Ward, Sgt. Eldon Campbell and Sgt. Duffy. Of the 25 attending the course only 11 finished.

    Houlton — The Houlton-Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars awarded $18,375 during graduation activities.
    Varney Award — Joe Devou graduating Houlton High senior was the recipient of the Willie Varney Award. The award is based on the caliber of athletic ability and personal attributes of the recipient as personified by the late Varney. Kristi Gallop received the Willie Varney Athletic Scholarship. Gallop was a member of the soccer, basketball and softball teams.
    East Grand — Head coach, Leola Cowan is retiring from her duties at East Grand School after 22 years.
    Split vote — The Aroostook County Jail Study Committee split evenly on whether to have the County Jail continued at Houlton or moved to Caribou. The committee will seek more information and consider their options at the next meeting.
    Green fees — The Houlton Community Golf Course voted to raise the green fees to $7 on weekdays and $11 on weekends.
