First-graders Chance Beaulieu and Emily Shaw place compost around their Stacyville Pear tree at Wellington School in Monticello. The students removed winter screening around the tree trunks, weeded each tree and applied circles of compost. Wellington’s fruit orchard of Maine native varieties was established in 2007 with funding from Slow Food Aroostook County and is tended by the schoolchildren.
