    Crescent Park — The young ladies of the different cottages here gave a dance to their gentlemen friends on Friday evening at the pavilion.

GOING TO FRANCE — The Foreign Language department of Houlton High School sponsored an educational trip to France in 1973, planned by Eugene Jackins, chairman of the department with the assistance of Maher Travel Bureau. Tours to Versalles, Chantilly, Chatres, Rouen and Normandy were planned, beyond the touring of Paris. Two nights out at the theatre, sight seeing by river boat and shopping were also planned. From left in front, Sandy Fenalson, Claudia Jackins, Tara McPhee, Kathy McCormick, Brenda Hutchinson, Ross Vincent, James McPartland and Jackins; second row, Kristy Watson, Anne Carton, Judy Gentle, Debbie Lewis, Debbie Moran, John Madigan, Dan McGillicuddy and Cathy Henderson. Absent when the photo was taken were Jon McLaughlin, Jane Ritchie and Kent London.

    Patten — A number attended the dance at the Grange Hall last Friday night at Patten. A good time was reported. Excellent music by McKenney, Ambrose and Rowe.
    Children’s picnic — The buckboard for the Eastern Star children’s picnic will leave Newell’s Store Thursday morning at 9 o’clock and any child who has no way of getting out will be cared for.

75 Years Ago-July 12, 1934

    Scholarship — Ralph Dougherty, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Dougherty has been awarded one of the five $2,000 merit prizes established by Roger W. Babson to use at Babson Institute.
    Fishman’s — The M.H. Fishman Company has just installed a new and improved dress department in the front of their store using modern display methods that provide a chance to show every garment.
    Exchange Hotel — The appearance of the exterior of the Exchange Hotel is being considerably improved by a coat of paint. A color scheme of cream and brown trimmings is being used above the balcony with green on the storefronts on the street floor.
    Crescent Park — Proprietor George Russell, owner of one of the most famous resorts and dance pavilions in Aroostook County, varied his usual Wednesday dance program this week by holding one on Tuesday evening to secure the music of Al Smith and his orchestra.
    Sherman Mills — J.A. Roberts has purchased a new Lafayette Nash car. Charlie McDonald has a new Chevrolet with radio attached.

50 Years Ago-July 9, 1959

    Monticello — Flames swept by strong wind prevented firemen from saving the structures on Carlton Brewer’s farm located on the Hoyt Road. Six buildings including a 10-room home were destroyed. The family lost their furnishings, farm machinery, hens and livestock.
    Stamps — New soil conservation postage stamps will be issued on August 26. Cost is 4 cents.
    Cross — The steel cross was placed in position at the site of the new St. Mary’s Catholic Church under construction. Workmen also placed I-beams on the roof edifice. The beams weigh five tons and were hoisted by a crane and lowered into position.
    Keep Houlton Beautiful — Chadwick and Boutilier’s Florist Shops planted flowers in the watering trough in Market Square and around the Houlton Regional Development Corporation sign on the Bangor Road.

    Children — Dawn and Ed Degenhardt’s deep love for children led them to adopt nine. Sharing and caring is emphasized  in their home. In November they will all be teenagers at the same time, with eight living at home.
    Custom class — Chalmer Karnes and Timothy McAtee won trophies while participating at the Auto Show 84 at the Presque Isle Forum. Karnes won first place in custom pickup with his 1980 Bronco. McAtee won second with his 1978 Camaro.
    Seizure — The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department seized nearly $50,000 worth of marijuana over the weekend and arrested two men. Also confiscated were two vehicles and a sum of money.
    Island Falls — Warren Walker and Tim Prescott are off to the Maine Amateur Golf Tournament.
    Potato crop — Senator Bill Cohen has requested that the U.S. Department of Agriculture direct an emergency study to assess potato crop damage in Aroostook County due to the extensive rains over the last few weeks.
