Island Falls Happenings

Riva Hawkes, Special to The County

On Feb. 13, Maurine Hannaford arrived in Island Falls to spend the weekend with Riva Hawkes and her aunt, Phyllis Jenkins. She arrived bringing a delicious apple pie, which we all sure enjoyed, and a bag of books for our reading.
Maurine and Phyllis left the next morning to return to their respective homes, Maurine in Kennebunk and Phyllis back to Bow, N.H., after spending six weeks in Island Falls with Riva following her illness.
The Lenten breakfasts are once again being held in the vestry of the Whittier Church and the first one was held February 21 with Patti Hartin as chief cook. She was assisted by fellow church members. These breakfasts are sponsored by the deacons and are very popular and usually very well attended. The door will be open to one and all.
There will be a town meeting on March 22 and the main topic will be the ambulance. I’m sure there will be a good attendance as we certainly don’t want to lose local ambulance service.
Every morning while doing the dishes, I watch scads of female gold finch feeding and the poor chickadees have a hard time getting their breakfast. After the finch leave, I run out and fill up the feeders so all the other birds can have their fill. I still have the two gray squirrels and at least one red one. Every afternoon about 4 p.m., I take out the bread and apples for the deer and they now are coming closer to me when they hear me talking to them.  Usually there are four, but on occasion two more are around.
