The County Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) basketball teams grades 9 and 11 played in the Portland area and according to coach David DeMerchant, “did really well.”
The ninth graders won two games and tied two, while the 11th graders went 3-1.
The freshmen defeated Falmouth 40-36 in their opening game with Becca McDougal and Alexa Massey both of Caribou tossed in 13 points apiece. Their next contest against the Lady Patriots was a low-scoring win, 22-15, as Kelly Dugal of Madawaska scored six points and Massey added five.
The next game against the Triple Threat was close all the way, DeMerchant said, with the County girls final shot rolling around the rim and out to keep the game tied at 30-all. Massey led the scoring with 14 points and McDougal scored eight and GHCA’s Mariah Wiley, six more. In their last game, the County tied, as the Madness Team hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Leading the scoring for the County were Houlton’s Marina Cameron, six points; Southern Aroostook’s Kristen Tarr and Houlton’s Tori Hanson, both with five points each. The County freshmen’s record is 4-3-2.
The 16-year-old County Team won their first game, 45-39 over Falmouth behind Shelby Hartin of Southern Aroostook, who had 12 points and Erin Dugal of Madawaska added nine. The County won their second game, 21-11 over the Midcoast Warriors, as Jasmine Rockwell of Southern Aroostook netted eight points and Dugal added seven more to pace the offense.
The County’s third victim was Winslow, 32-25. Rockwell tossed in 10 points, while twin sister Janel netted seven.
The Northstars soundly defeated the County in their last game of the weekend, 39-16. The County team played with five girls, and according to DeMerchant, “ran out of gas.”
The team was led by Hartin and Jasmine Rockwell each with seven points and Kim Levesque of Hodgdon chipped in with two points. The team’s record is 5-4.
