Local Girl Scouts to hold recycling display, activities

PRESQUE ISLE – Cadets from Girl Scout Troop 81 will be hosting a recycling project at the Aroostook Centre Mall Saturday, April 12 from noon-3 p.m. In celebration of Earth Day later in the month, the girls will be presenting educational material about recycling, as well as providing hands-on activities for children around the same theme.     “If everyone does even a small part, it all adds up and makes a difference,” said Haley Smith of Presque Isle, one of the troop members.
To better prepare others to do their part, eight girls from the troop have been working diligently over the past couple of months to gather display materials that will provide information how and why to recycle glass, paper, cardboard, plastic, bottles and cans, and universal waste. In addition to recycling, information on making better uses of resources will be provided, with details on composting, as well as alternative products, such as CFL light bulbs.
To make the information fun and informative, the girls have planned several children’s activities during the day. Children of all ages are invited to take part in the turtle races, using small plastic containers as their “turtles,” which they will be able to decorate with their own style. They will also be able to make their own bracelets and wallets, play games and listen to stories.
Troop 81 is comprised of girls from Presque Isle, Easton and Caribou. They are working collectively on this recycling project as their challenge project for their Silver Award, which most of the girls are trying to earn.
They invited community members, especially those with children, to stop by to see them anytime between noon-3 p.m. Saturday, April 12 by Trader Joe’s in the mall.
