HARRISONBURG, Va. – Eastern Mennonite University defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 8-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the nightcap of their softball doubleheader Tuesday, April 1.
In the first game, junior Erica Davis (Cumberland) allowed seven hits for eight Royal runs, walked eight and stuck out two. Davis had two of the Owls’ three hits in the game, singling twice to lead her Owl team. Senior Anna Lenentine (Monticello) went 1 for 3 from the plate with a base hit single. Mandee Madden doubled and singled with two RBIs for Eastern Mennonite. Anna Coleman singled and drove in two runs in five innings of play for the 8-0 win.
In the second game, UMPI tied the game in the top of the fourth as the Owls were able to score two runs on only one earned hit. Shortstop freshman Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester) reached first base on an EMU fielding error. Davis doubled into left field for UMPI’s lone hit, advancing Humphrey to third base.
Lenentine then drove in Humphrey, earning the Owl’s only RBI of the game. Davis also came around to score on an EMU fielding error.
With the game tied at two, the EMU pitching staff took over as Natasha Viafora relieved starting pitcher Nicole Wade barred down and held the Owls hitless through the final three innings to pick up the win.
For the Owls, Nicole Russell (Newcastle) pitched a complete game, allowing 12 hits on six runs, walking none, while earning one strikeout.
