The Houlton Lady Shires’ season came to an end last Tuesday in a rain-laden game in Madawaska, as the Owls picked up a 5-3 win to advance to the Class C semifinals.
“We played a pretty good game in tough conditions,” said Houlton coach Tim Tweedie. “Madawaska is a very good team. They simply outplayed us.”
The Lady Shires finish the year with an 8-5-1 record.
The Owls held a 4-2 halftime lead, with Erin Dugal scoring their first goal. Nicole Cyr and Meagan Ouellette each scored twice in the game, while Olivia Pelletier and Samantha Nadeau added assists.
For Houlton, Amanda Fogarty notched two goals, with Abby Kinens adding a single tally. Chenise Tingley and Chelsi Murray each had an assist.
“I am proud of the effort the kids put forth,” Tweedie said. “We battled back twice to tie the game after falling behind. But, every time we fought back to tie, Madawaska countered with a goal of their own. It was a fun, wild game.”
Houlton goalie Ashley Drew blocked eight of 19 shots, while Madawaska’s netkeeper stopped seven of 13 shots.
Tweedie is proud of his players’ progression through the season and into the playoffs.
“In the last two years, the girls have only lost seven times in 30 games,” he said. “So, that is nothing to be ashamed of. This is a tremendous group of kids. I think we had a great time this season.”
