LUDLOW – Roger Leland McGary, 79, husband of Elizabeth (Dickinson) McGary passed away peacefully at his home Jan. 7, 2011. He was born Aug. 30, 1931 in Smyrna Mills, the son of Clifford and Enza (Dewitt) McGary.
Roger attended Ricker College for 3 1/2 years before joining the army during the Korean War. Upon returning home he joined his dad and mom working on the family farm. He worked hard and enjoyed growing potatoes and during slower times he would work in the woods. He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing and telling hunting stories.
Roger also loved the Lord and read his Bible every day. He wrote many songs and poetry and two of his poems can be found in the Library of Congress.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Ludlow; his children, John L. and his wife Kalara of Howland, Roger W. and his wife Dezray of Houlton, Anna McGary Robinson and her husband Ted of Sedgewick, Nathan Richardson and his wife Patti of Rochester, NH; 11 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and infant brother, John, and brother, Bill. Also, through the years, Roger and Elizabeth opened their home to 13 foster children.
Friends called at the Dunn Funeral Home 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Services with Military Honors were held at the funeral home 1 p.m. Tuesday. Spring interment will be in the Lower Smyrna Cemetery.
