PRESQUE ISLE — Even in the current challenging economic times, one sector showing modest growth is health care. To help meet the need for additional personnel, Northern Maine Community College is offering several short-term medical profession courses this spring.
A “Certified Residential Medication Aide” (CRMA) course is scheduled from Thursday, Jan. 27 through Thursday, Feb. 10 on Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. In this 40-hour course, students will learn safe, accurate and appropriate methods of administering medications, as well as acceptable documentation techniques. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified by the state of Maine to administer oral medications in residential care settings. This course costs $350.
For students needing to update their CRMA certification, a “CRMA Recertification” course is scheduled for Friday, March 4 or Wednesday, May 4 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. This 8-hour course offers a complete review and update on the state regulation for the administration of medications. CRMAs are required to recertify every two years. A current CRMA 40 certificate is required to register for this course. The cost is $129.
An “Advanced Life Support Refresher” course is being offered on Mondays, Feb. 7, 14 and 28 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday to Sunday, March 4-6 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. This 48-hour course, designed for EMT Intermediates and Paramedics, meets the educational requirements for re-licensure and for registration in the National Registry for EMTs. The cost of this course is $220.
Other upcoming health care courses include “Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers,” “Adult First Aid with CPR & AED,” “Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider” (PALS), and “EMT Basic Refresher.”
