High school season winds down

Lady Shires drop two, overtake Hodgdon late
    The Houlton High School girls fell to visiting Caribou on Monday, 49-34, for their sixth loss of the season.
    Caribou set the pace early jumping to a 20-7 opening lead. They led at halftime, 28-16 and maintained a double-digit scoring spread after the third, 36-26.
    Sam Keegan led Houlton’s offense with 10 points, while Tori Hanson had seven and Marina Cameron six more.
    The Lady Shires had to work hard for their 39-32 victory over host Hodgdon Saturday. The Lady Hawks came out and took an 11-2 opening lead before Houlton climbed back into the game, tying the score at 14-all at the 4:06 mark of the second quarter. The Lady Shires took a 17-14 halftime advantage.
    In the third, the game stayed tied at 21-all until Houlton pulled away with 1:46 left in the stanza for a 26-23 lead. In the decisive fourth quarter, Houlton held a slim 28-26 advantage before finally putting Hodgdon away in the final minutes.
    Amanda Fogarty led Houlton with 10 points. Cameron, Keegan and Taylor Bailey each added five points.
    For Hodgdon, Mariah Wiley tossed in 11 points, while Jennah Steamer had nine points and 10 rebounds and Lacey McQuarrie added five points and brought down eight rebounds.
    In East Millinocket last Thursday, the Lady Shires couldn’t overcome Schenck, who took a 43-41 victory from them.
    Schenk led throughout the game: 12-4; 24-20 and 32-27.
    Fogarty netted 16 points and Bailey 10 more for Houlton. Hanson added five points in the game.
    The Lady Hawks were in Dyer Brook on Friday night and were narrowly defeated by Southern Aroostook, 59-53 in overtime.

    SACS took a 16-7 opening lead and held a 24-21 halftime advantage. After the third, the Lady Warriors were in the lead 37-31 before Hodgdon tied the game in the final stanza to force overtime.
    Sable Altvater scored eight of her 18 points in the overtime period. She also grabbed 13 rebounds. Shelby Hartin tossed in 14 points and hauled down 15 boards. Olivia Raymond scored 12 points. Jasmine Rockwell added seven points and her twin sister Janel chipped in with six points.
    Haley Gardiner keyed Hodgdon with 14 points and McQuarrie tossed in 11. Brittany Davies scored nine points, while Haley Quint eight more.
Shiretowners suffer loss
    The Houlton Shiretowners were defeated last Friday night, 65-44, by visiting Calais. The Blue Devils led 17-8 to start the game and 27-17 at halftime. In the third, Calais held a 46-33 advantage.
    Nick Guiod scored 16 points for Houlton, while Elyjah Crockett and Micah Goetsch both had eight points. Craig Thomas added six points, as well.
SACS girls shake Katahdin; Lady Cougars defeated
    The Southern Aroostook girls couldn’t shake Katahdin easily on Monday night in Dyer Brook, but finally used a 22-11 second half run to pull away for a 44-34 win.
    Shelby Hartin keyed SACS with 15 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks, while Jasmine Rockwell netted 11 points. Olivia Raymond added eight points for the winners.
    For Katahdin, Megan Merry tossed in 12 points, while Morgan Livezey scored nine points. Brittany Fogarty and Myah Smallwood each chipped in with five.
    Katahdin led through the first half, 23-22, before SACS came back in the third to take a 36-29 advantage en route to the win.
Katahdin teams play well
    The Katahdin Cougars suffered a 57-48 loss to host Fort Kent on Saturday.
    Fort Kent grabbed a 29-21 halftime lead and extended it over three, 44-35 en route to the win.
    Colton Bivighouse led Katahdin with 14 points, while Brandon Robinson tossed in 13. Jesse McNally had eight points, while Kolby Gallagher added seven and Billy Livezey six more.
    The Lady Cougars were overpowered by host Fort Kent last Saturday, 79-20.
    Fort Kent started with a 14-0 lead and built a 38-12 halftime cushion. Livezey and Fogarty paced Katahdin with four points apiece.

    Both Katahdin teams played Ashland last Friday in Stacyville, and both teams picked up a win.
    In the boys game, the Cougars won, 55-47.
    It was nip-and-tuck throughout the game with Ashland leading at halftime, 28-26. Katahdin came back in the third to retake the lead, 38-35 and hang on for the win.
    Bivighouse scored 15 of his 25 points in the second half to power Katahdin, while Robinson had 16 and Livezey added 11.
    The Lady Cougars led 25-11 at halftime and 31-18 after three to take a 41-31 victory over Ashland.
    Brittany Fogarty scored 13 points and Megan Merry added eight points. Myah Smallwood and Mikayla Patterson each scored six points.
    Last Tuesday in Dyer Brook, the Cougars used a strong fourth quarter to defeat SACS, 62-54.
    The Warriors trailed 31-26 at halftime, but narrowed the scoring gap to 38-36 after the third. Katahdin’s Livezey scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth to key Katahdin.
    Bivighouse scored 19 and Robinson 14 more for Katahdin. McNally scored eight and Gallagher six more for the winners.
    For the Warriors, Robinson tossed in a game-high 22 points, while Rockwell finished with 15 and Goodall eight more.
Warriors split
    The Southern Aroostook Warriors met a talented Washburn club on Saturday. The host Beavers started strong with a 21-10 opening advantage and a halftime lead of 42-28. After three, Washburn spread the score to 69-43.
    Cody Robinson led SACS with 21 points, while Rob Rockwell tossed in 14 more. Anthony Diaferio scored nine points and Jesse Boulier added five.
    Last Thursday, the Warriors overtook visiting Hodgdon, 68-51 behind Rockwell’s game-high 28 points.
    The Warriors turned a 12-6 lead into a 37-19 halftime cushion. The Warriors would extend their advantage over three, 56-33.
    Robinson scored 17 and Pat Goodall 13 more for the winners.
    For Hodgdon, Josh Hudson tossed in 20, while Nick Lunn posted 13. Jake Tidd scored 11 and Devon Logie added six more.
Hodgdon overtaken in second half
    The host Fort Fairfield Tigers used a strong second half to overtake Hodgdon, 70-45 last Tuesday.
    The Tigers held a 23-19 halftime advantage, but Hodgdon came back to lead 33-24 with five minutes left in the third. Fort Fairfield then used a 19-3 run to end the quarter ahead, 43-36.

    Nick Lunn paced Hodgdon with 16 points, while Josh Hudson had 15 points and eight rebounds. Devon Logie added six points and Jake Tidd five for the Hawks.
East Grand winless
    The East Grand girls and boys teams were defeated by host Woodland on Monday.
    In girls action, the Lady Vikings fell 53-13, as they were held scoreless in the second quarter as the Dragons jumped to a 26-2 lead.
    Shaunna Beaudoin posted six points for East Grand.
    In the boys game, East Grand trailed at halftime, 30-4, as Woodland cruised to a 68-16 victory.
    Robert Cousins had five points to pace the Vikes.
    Last Friday, the East Grand girls and boys both were defeated by host Jonesport-Beals
    The Lady Vikings were overtaken, 60-21.
    Kaitlyn Beaudoin paced East Grand with nine points.
    In the boys’ game, Jonesport-Beals took an 89-29 victory.
    Alex Brittain scored 10 points for East Grand. Dustin Morse and Billy Holmes both had six points in the game.
    East Grand hosted Greenville last Thursday night, and both teams were winless.
    In the boys’ game, Greenville cruised to a 40-16 win.
    Cousins scored eight points for East Grand.
    In the girls game, Greenville overpowered East Grand, 51-28.
    S. Beaudoin paced East Grand with 18 points and Elisha Farley had six.
GHCA competitive
    The Greater Houlton Christian Academy girls played Van Buren on Saturday at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The Crusaders cruised to a 59-25 victory.
    Olivia Lord keyed GHCA with nine points.
    On Friday night in Hodgdon, the GHCA girls and boys hosted Easton in a double header.
    In the girls’ game, Easton won 61-20.
    The Bears grabbed a 34-9 halftime lead and continued their drive in the third, 52-16.

    GHCA put up a 3-pointer at the end of the game, which fell short, but an Eagle rebound led to a second chance that was missed at the buzzer.
    Easton opened the game with a 22-13 advantage and built a halftime cushion of 37-27. After three, GHCA was starting to rally, 50-42.
    Micah Wiley and Adam Little paced GHCA with 15 points each. Deyrell Vargas tossed in eight, while Russell Socoby and Isaiah Straubel each added five points.
    Last Tuesday, the GHCA teams traveled to East Grand and split a pair of games.
    In the boys’ game, the Eagles took a 40-28 win.
    Vargas led GHCA with 10 points, while Little scored nine and Straubel five more.
    For East Grand, Logan Crone netted seven points, while Dustin Morse and Billy Holmes both came away with six points.
    In the girls’ game, East Grand outscored GHCA 27-6 in the second half for a 45-23 victory.
    S. Beaudoin scored 20 points, including 12 in the second half and Farley finished with 17.
    For GHCA, Destinee Neureuther had nine points and Bishop added five.
