100 Years Ago-March 8, 1911
Aroostook Times
New catalogue — The new catalogue of Ricker Classical Institute has been published and is a model of neatness and arrangement.
Oakfield — The new passenger station at Oakfield has been completed by the contractors, Astle & Page of this town, and was turned over to the R.R. officials last week. It is said to be a model of convenience.
Modernizing — James McPartland has a crew of men at work at the Post Office building, installing a new and up-to-date plumbing system. Mr. McPartland did the work on the building when it was built some 18 years ago.
Ludlow — Ingraham Bros. sold a fine cow to James Longstaff last week.
Ice racing — Six local horses competed at the ice track this week; “Hello Bill”, Chas. Shaw; “Easter”, A.E. Mooers; “Baby W.”, Frank Stitham; “Muldora”, Zemro McBride; ”Bobby Wilkes”, D.B. Tingley; and “King Do-Do”, G.R. Ervin.

Captain — Harold Bossie was unanimously elected to lead the 1937 Houlton High hoopsters as captain. Bossie has been an outstanding forward on this year’s strong quintet.
Madigan Hospital — On March 8th, the Madigan Memorial Hospital celebrates its 21st birthday.

RE-ELECTED — Thomas P. Packard, above, left, was re-elected to the board of Selectmen during the recent Town meeting. Joseph H. McGillicuddy, center will be the Town Treasurer and Walter B. Clark, right, will serve as the Town Clerk. During the meeting two new streets were accepted by the town. The first, Johnson Street and the second will be known as Hillside Street.
Rotary Club — The Houlton Rotary Club paid its respects to the Houlton High School basketball team for the splendid finish as they secured a semi-finalist position in the Aroostook Tournament.
Assembly — Students at Houlton High School gathered for a special program on Wednesday. Miss Carol Gardner of the fifth grade, entertained the student body with a song and tap dancing number. A quintet that performed called Moses’ Troubadours, included; Harold Dow, Verlie Campbell, Eric Richards, Earl Stoton and Elmer Stoton.

Class honor parts — The Houlton High School 1961 class honor parts are; valedictorian, Linda L. Lovely; salutatorian, Elizabeth Ann Thompson; first honor, Theodore W. Mason and second honor, Clara A. Niles.
Wanted — Responsible adults who like boys and girls. Job as 4-H Club leader. No salary. Must take pay in smiles and satisfaction of job well done. Apply at Cooperative Extension Service Office. No experience necessary. We train you on the job.
Latin Club Banquet — The H.H.S. Latin Club held its annual banquet with all members arriving in Roman costume. Entertainment between courses consisted of a dance by Roman girls, Elaine Salisbury, Marilyn Hoar, Patricia Sanborn and Elizabeth Gibson; poetry readings by Maryellen McCluskey, Elaine Salisbury and Betsey Lane and several musical selections.
Recordings — The first of 12 recordings from top musical comedies, produced by Ed Sullivan of TV fame, is now available at A&P Food Stores.

State Champions — The Houlton Lady Shires basketball team captured its second straight State title in Class B with a 52-43 victory over York High School. The Hodgdon boys team fell to Falmouth High School, 76-59 in their quest for the Class C state title.
Name change — The nation’s oldest manufacturer of the contemporary log home has changed its name to Ward Log Homes to more accurately reflect the position log homes enjoy as mainstream housing for many American families. The company was founded in Houlton in 1923 as Ward Cabin Company.
Musical — Houlton High School music department under the direction of Bob Bahr will present “West Side Story.” Teresa Haggerty, Kim Clukey, Tamara Clark, Tom Beaulieu, Mary Inman, Leigh Fitzpatrick and Fred Grant have major roles in the production.
