BU-CLR-Rotary Guest-dcx-pt-16ROTARY SPEAKER — On April 11, Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin welcomed guests, Kim Gore, state director of America’s Edge, and James Madore, Aroostook County Sheriff to Houlton’s Rotary Club meeting. Chief Asselin and Sheriff Madore belong to an organization called Fight Crime, Invest in Kids. The organization is about educating children at a young age through Head Start Programs and Pre-K.  There are 5,000 police chiefs and law enforcement officials that belong to this organization. Gore spoke about America’s Edge, a national non-profit organization of business leaders dedicated to strengthening businesses and the economy through proven investments in our nation’s children and Youth. America’s Edge focuses on programs targeted at children in their earliest years from birth to age 5, as well as on quality programs for high school students, such as career academy models.For more information, contact Gore, kgore@americasedge.org.

BU-CLR-New Rotary-dcx-pt-16NEW MEMBERS — The Houlton Rotary Club welcomed two new members Monday April 11 as Dean Clark, left, and Otis Smith, middle, were accepted to Rotary. With the two new members is president Scott White. Rotary International is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide providing humanitarian service and building goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary both locally and worldwide.

BU-Check Presentation-dcx-pt-15CHECK PRESENTATION — The Houlton Rotary Club presented Dale Flewelling of Friends of Aroostook with a check to help them buy seed for their spring planting.  The money will be matched; so much will be reaped from this contribution.  The Friends of Aroostook’s vegetable-growing program was a huge success last year and Rotary is proud to be involved with the program again this year. BU-Rotary-dcx-pt-15ROTARY SPEAKER — On April 4, Rotarian Forrest Barnes welcomed guest speaker James Foss, Aroostook County jail administrator, to the group’s weekly meeting. Foss has been the jail administrator since May 1991.  He spoke on different areas of the jail such as the limit capacity, available programs to the inmates and how many meals are served yearly to the inmates.Foss also spoke of the new technology they have now such as video conferencing for arraignments.
