Marina R. DiMarco,
valedictorian
Marty Bouchard, principal of Houlton High School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2011.
The honor parts are: Marina R. DiMarco, valedictorian; Tyler J. Delano, salutatorian; Tanner B. Caron, first honor essayist; and Gaige P. Flewelling, second honor essayist.
DiMarco, the daughter of Steve and Mary Beth DiMarco of Houlton, is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honors student. She has served as class secretary and is a Senior Class Vice President. She is a member of the Student Council and has attended Maine YMCA Youth in Government, serving as a senator and Commissioner of Natural Resources. DiMarco is a recipient of the Maine Principal’s Association Principal’s Award, the Princeton Book Award and the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award.
DiMarco is a four year member of the Symphonic Band, trumpet and French horn soloist and section leader, Chamber Choir, Off Beat Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band soloist and section leader and received the individual Outstanding Musicianship Award for 2011 at the state jazz band competition. She has participated in the All-Aroostook Band as soloist and section leader, All-State Chorus, Show Choir and the fall musicals. She has also served as the varsity tennis team manager.
She is a member of the United State Pony Clubs and the Meduxnekeag River Pony Club where she is an upper level member, instructor and horse show and clinic organizer. She received the Corinne Gray Award, and is a volunteer and instructor, Regional Youth Board Leader, United States Pony Clubs. She is the Maine Combined Training Association Regional Representative, Public Relations Director and Technical Advisor in Training. She has received year-end awards at Beginner Novice, Novice and Training Junior levels.
DiMarco will attend Middlebury College and will major in International Politics and Economics.
salutatorian
Delano, son of Dana Delano and Julie Delano of Houlton, is president of the National Honor Society and has been on the Academic Decathlon Team. He attended Dirigo Boys’ State where he was named a State Samsung Scholar, and has served as treasurer and president of the Student Council. He has also served as treasurer and vice-president of his class and was a second place Science Fair finalist.
Delano received the Frederick Douglas –Susan B Anthony Citizenship Award and was named Student of the Month for citizenship and school contributions. He has participated in the Youth in Government program, the Civil Rights Club and was a Rotary Youth Exchange Student.
Very active in the music program, Delano is a member of the chamber choir, show choir where he received Best Male Vocalist Award at the State Show Choir Competition, jazz band, percussion ensemble, symphonic band, All-State Chorus, All-Aroostook Chorus and has had the lead role in the fall musical.
He is a four-year member of the varsity tennis team, serving as team captain for two years. He is also active in his church youth group. Delano will be attending the University of Connecticut and will major in business administration.
Tanner B. Caron,
first honor essayist
Caron, son of Ricky Caron and Linda Bellisle of Houlton, is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honors student. Caron has served as class president for four years and is a four-year member of the Student Council. He is a member of the Student Council Executive Committee.
He has played varsity baseball for two years and is involved in the music program as a four-year member of the jazz band and the percussion ensemble Off Beat. He has also participated in the fall musical. In his spare time he enjoys playing the guitar and working out.
Caron has been accepted at the University of Maine at Orono in the Explorations Program.
Gaige P. Flewelling,
second honor essayist
Flewellling, son of Harold and Aimee Flewelling of Houlton, is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honors student. He has received the Williams College Book Award, The Daughters’ of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award and was named an Aroostook League Scholar Athlete and a Penquis Valley Conference Scholar Athlete.
Flewelling has played varsity golf for four years and varsity basketball for two years. He is a member of the Symphonic Band, the Pep Band, and is a section leader in the high school band. He is very active in community affairs coaching fifth and sixth grade recreation department basketball, assisting with the summer golf student lessons, umpiring little league games and helped work on the little league field. He also volunteers to read to elementary students in the Read Across America program, volunteers for the Northern Maine Soap Box Derby and is involved in the National Honor Society community service activities.
Flewelling plans to attend the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the nursing program.
