Dickinson grateful for Pioneer Times intern experience

Houlton Pioneer Times intern Doug Dickinson has reached the end of his four-week internship at the newspaper.
“Working as an intern at the Houlton Pioneer Times has been a great pleasure and has provided me with valuable experience working in the journalism field,” said Dickinson. “It has been a joy getting used to working at a weekly newspaper. I greatly value my time interacting and working with the Houlton Pioneer Times staff.”
Working at a professional newspaper was a huge step for Dickinson.
“When I first started the internship in Houlton I hoped that it would be more challenging for me than if I had worked in my own hometown of Woodstock, New Brunswick. In that aspect I wasn’t let down. Working in Maine forced me to establish new contacts and learn an area I wasn’t particularly familiar with.”
In his time working at the newspaper, Dickinson has grown as a person and as a working journalist.
“I have gotten accustomed to the various aspects of news reporting, including gathering ideas, interviewing subjects, taking photos, and writing stories,” he said.
“While I learned about those things in my two years studying journalism at NBCC Woodstock, nothing could compare to having the opportunity to gain experience working in the real world. I feel that my time interning at the Houlton Pioneer Times has been a huge step in preparing me for working in the journalism field upon completing my course at NBCC Woodstock.”
Dickinson is also thankful to everyone he met during his time in the Houlton area.
“I would like to thank the people of Houlton and the surrounding towns and communities for being so hospitable and welcoming. Working in the area was always a pleasure, and I took delight in interacting with everyone I spoke to while working at the Times,” Dickinson said.
Now that he has finished his four-week newspaper internship, the next step for Dickinson is a four-week internship at Woodstock radio station CJ104, following which he will graduate.
