PT Evelyn Lyons    PATTEN – The sun has risen for the first time in 85 years without shining its rays on one of God’s most beautiful creations. There is an empty silence. On June 9, 2011, our beloved mother, Evelyn “Honey” (Palmer) Lyons passed into God’s arms, finally giving her back all of her precious memories held captive by Alzheimer’s disease. She was born March 27, 1926, in Patten, the daughter of Ena (Parsons) Palmer.
She married her love, Roderick N. Lyons, and lived in Patten all of her adult life. Honey and Rod had four children, Rick and his wife, Linda, of Patten, Martena McAvoy and her husband, Dave Brown, of Limington, Ruth Fitzpatrick and her husband, Mark, of Winterport and Glenn and his wife, Melanie, of Bangor.
Honey served as a past noble grand of Rebekah Assembly of Maine, was a member and president of United Methodist Women, volunteered with Katahdin High School Reading Program and served on numerous community committees.
Our mother will always be remembered for her unfailing love for her family, sense of humor and laughter, and the tantalizing aroma of her cooking. All these things and more will be greatly missed but never forgotten by those who loved her. Our memories of a mother with a can-do and make-do attitude will always be part of our family gatherings. She had a special way that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her and the qualities that made her the wonderful person she was have left us with many beautiful memories.
In addition to her husband and four children, Honey is survived by her grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Lyons, Oliver and Zachery McAvoy, Olivia Mayor, Annie Liacos, Nicole Boucher and Neil Lyons, all of whom held a special spot in her heart; 14 great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Pauline Howe and Sharon McKiernan. She was predeceased by her mother; sister, Generieve Leavitt; and brother, Vernon Palmer II. Honey wanted to say “good-bye and thanks” to people she considered special friends: Sally Landry, Randy and Glenda Bossie, Gayle and Monica Noyes, Bob and Joyce Harvey, Ed and Jean Noyes, Isabelle McAvoy, and a special son-in-law, Ricky McAvoy.
Graveside funeral services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Patten Cemetery with the Rev. David Dyrenforth officiating. A reception followed after at Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, ME 04765.
