Remembering Independence Day

The fourth of July was a wondrous affair
We entered the park early and spent the day there
The horse pulling and races were a fabulous sight
There were rides and games and the fireworks at night.

My dad was a farmer who loved the horse-pulling sport
(And sneaking behind the grandstand for a bit of a snort)
My mom and other ladies brought food for us all
When we gathered ‘round to eat we really had a ball.

If the little ones got tired they napped on the ground
No one seemed to worry, even with strangers around
My friends and I were free to road where we may
Our folks didn’t fret if they didn’t see us all day.

We had a grand old time; it was a world of fun
Then we’d stumble back to the car when the fireworks were done
We’d soon fall asleep; our energy was blown
But I always wondered why my mother drove home!
