Walking good for both people and dogs

We have had such awesome weather lately, it is time to get out with your pet and have some fun. One thing I like to do with my dogs is to go walking. We walk about a mile, and when we get home, we are all pooped.

Luckily, I have an area on my own property to walk, so my dogs can go off leash. If you aren’t as lucky as I am, be sure to teach your dog how to properly walk on leash so that both of you can enjoy the walk. You can take an obedience class or invest in a gentle leader or sensation harness, or some other similar device. It honestly pays when you can both enjoy your walk.
Flea season is almost upon us, is your pet ready? You need to discuss with your veterinarian what is the best option for your pet. I personally use the topical flea treatment that lasts a month and is applied between the shoulders of your dog. There are other options, so be sure to find the one that is best for you and for your pet.
The date for the Paws for the Cause walk to benefit the Central Aroostook Humane Society is almost upon us! During this event, we will be having a dog wash, rabies clinic, microchip clinic, and pet pictures. We are also participating in the City Wide Yard Sale, so if you have some items you would like to donate, please bring them by the shelter during business hours (Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.). We appreciate all donations to help us care for the animals. This is a huge event, so please join us to help make it even bigger. This is a great time to show off your pet by bringing them to the walk. You will see animals of all different colors, shapes and sizes. You might even win a prize!
Just a word of warning: Cocoa mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called Theobromine. It is fatal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and really attracts dogs, which then ingest this mulch and die. Several deaths have already occurred in the last two to three weeks. A word of caution – check which mulch you are using in your garden and be watchful as to what your gardener is using in your garden. (http://www.sheltie.com/poisonwarning.htm).
If you are looking for a “friend for life,” please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We have  many wonderful animals looking for forever homes.
Wires is a handsome boy, he is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. He is housebroken and a lover!
Come visit or call the Humane Society at 764-3441.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
