For a local bird watching club, the saying “going on a wild goose chase” has taken on a whole new meaning, since the club offers a series of community field trips and presentations which highlight fall migration and seasonal changes that affect Aroostook’s birds.
Throughout October, Aroostook Birders have scheduled guided walks at popular birding spots throughout central Aroostook, as well as informational sessions with tips for homeowners on winter bird feeding.
Every Wednesday in October, Aroostook Birders will be on hand with a spotting scope at Collins Pond in Caribou from approximately 10 a.m. to noon to view the spectacle of hundreds of Canada Geese and other waterfowl returning to the pond each day as a mid-day roost. Those who come by for a look are urged to bring their cameras.
On Saturday, Oct. 1, club members will be available at the MPG Farm Store in Presque Isle from 9 a.m. to noon to offer information and demonstrations on various seeds, feeding products and feeders for setting up a winter home bird feeding station. All with an interest are invited to stop by throughout the morning.
A “Wild Goose Chase” is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22. Birders will visit favored Canada Goose roosting and feeding spots in Caribou, Limestone and Fort Fairfield to learn about their movements, behavior and why geese have made Aroostook a preferred migration stopover. Meet at Tim Hortons in Caribou at 7:30 a.m. for this field trip.
The next regular meeting of Aroostook Birders bird watching club is set for Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Fairfield Library. Topic is “Setting up a Great Bird Feeding Station.” Community members are invited to attend any and all events and outings.
