100 Years Ago-Dec. 27, 1911
Aroostook Times

    New Limerick — The saw mill formerly controlled by W.I. Shaw and now owned by Powers and Rogers, was totally destroyed by fire. This is the last of the once prosperous plants in this town.
    Linneus — Mr. and Mrs. Darius Stitham of Littleton spent Christmas at the Hadley Farm.
    Church organ — The new pipe organ at the Free Baptist Church was heard for the first time last Sunday and was much enjoyed by the large attendance at both morning and evening service.
75 Years Ago-Dec. 24, 1936

    Sherman Mills — Vaughn Ellison, Robert Parker, Billy Lawlor and George Clark went to Millinocket to play for a dance.
    Benedicta — The electric light line has been completed and ready for those who have their house wired.
    Local — Thomas Grammeau will drive the stage through the winter months for Roland McAvoy.
50 Years Ago- Dec. 28, 1961

    Houlton — Garvin Golding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Golding, a student at Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, New Hampshire is spending the Christmas and New Year’s holidays with his parents at their home on Heywood Street.

Coach Judith Oliver said she had 60 candidates report for opening practice and from this field she chose 18 girls. Her top girls to date are shown with her at a session. Kneeling from left, Hollie Ingraham, Maryellen McCluskey, Nancy Bell, Sara Lavasseur, Martha Doyle and Deanna Davenport. Standing is Coach Oliver, also physical education director and Jane MacPherson.

    Hovey Hill — The Houlton Ski Club has expanded its skiing facilities at Hovey Hill to accommodate 300 skiers at one time compared to 150 last year.
    Retirement — Ray Astle, Houlton post office employee for 32 years received a butterfly cake made by Mrs. Bert Wise of Liberty, a custom she began many years ago while a Houlton resident.
    Hodgdon — Jerome L. Quint has been promoted to captain in the Maine Air National Guard.

    Exporters — Bradbury Barrel Co. in Bridgewater is exploring the export market for its products particularly to Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
    D.A.R. — Miss Debra Schools of Littleton was recently chosen by the Senior Class as their representative for D.A.R. Good Citizen.
    Key Bank — Children attending Moosebrook Head Start School received large stuffed Christmas teddy bears as gifts from the local bank.
    Winners — Russell Flewelling of Monticello was awarded first place in the House Decorating Contest. Second place went to Bonnie Quint of Hodgdon and third place to Glenn Violette of Littleton.
