In October, members of the 4-H Wild Mustangs volunteered their time and abilities at the Grand Opening of Houlton’s Tractor Supply. Nationally, as well as locally, Tractor Supply has been a generous contributor to 4-H programs.
With some charitable assistance from County Yankee for the food, members grilled hot dogs and served sodas to more than 400 people attending the event. Volunteering at the opening of the Houlton store were Samantha Farrar, Kristen Farwell, Megan Fitzpatrick, Mikayla Fitzpatrick, Sara Fitzpatrick, Hannah Jacobs, Samantha Keegan, Megan McLaughlin and Melissa Peabody. Adult volunteers were Tammy Farwell, Tonya Fitzpatrick, Stephanie Jacobs, Anita Levesque, Lynette McLaughlin and Carmen McGuire, Wild Mustangs club leader.
Donations were received from Tractor Supply and the public during the event. Following a presentation and discussion by Club President Sara Fitzpatrick, the club voted at their November meeting to apply the money raised from this community service project to the Smile Train organization, which supplies surgeries for children with cleft palates. Children with this easily correctable deformity are often unable to eat, speak or breathe properly. They are sometimes forbidden to attend school.
A check for $275 was sent to provide one child with a surgery for cleft palate. The Smile Train organization was grateful to the 4-H Wild Mustangs for the gift of a smile to a child this Christmas.
