Alumni games help scholars

HOULTON — Former basketball players from Houlton and Hodgdon high schools returned to the hardwood Dec. 30 for the inaugural Dollars for Scholars Alumni Games.
Held at Houlton High School, more than 600 people came out to see former players relive their glory days in a friendly pair of basketball games, which also served as a fundraiser for the Dollars for Scholars program.
“We would like to thank all the players, cheerleaders, referees, coaches and fans for their support,” said Bernadette Willette, president of the Houlton-Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars. “Your support has made it possible for the seniors from both Houlton and Hodgdon high schools to once again receive scholarship money for their second semester of college.”
About $4,000 was raised by the event, Willette said.

No scorebooks were kept for the games. Houlton won the women’s game 25-16, while the men’s game ended in a 57-all tie. In a classy move, the two men’s squads opted not to go to overtime to decide a victor.
Willette extended a special vote of gratitude to the executive board for pulling the games together in a relatively short amount of time. She also thanked those local businesses, which donated pizza and other food items that were sold at the concession stand.
