Presque Isle – Maurice Keith Higgins, 77, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 26, 2006, with his family beside him. He was born Nov. 7, 1929, in Presque Isle, the son of Ernest Vivian and Lucy (Kennerson) Higgins.
After graduating from Presque Isle High School in 1948, he attended the Aroostook School of Commerce, from which he received an associate's degree
in accounting in 1950. He then served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1951 to 1953. On returning to Presque Isle, he worked at Maine Public Service in the stores department from 1953 to 1955. From 1955 until his retirement in 1986, he worked at the U.S. Post Office in Presque Isle. After a year of retirement, he worked part-time as a mail clerk at Key Bank in Presque Isle from 1987 to 1995. He was a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hayward-Frazier Post 2599, and the American Legion, Ray Goding Post 88, where he was a past commander. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus #2524, 3rd degree, and the Knights of Columbus #0363, 4th degree.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Mary Jane (Plourde) of Presque Isle; two daughters, Anne Francois and husband, James, of South Portland, and Kathy Higgins of Presque Isle; a son, Michael Higgins of Cambridge, Mass.; a sister, Connie Parker of Presque Isle; a granddaughter, Christa-Jane Francois; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two half-brothers, J. Reginald Higgins and Dana Higgins; and a half-sister, Pauline Burnett. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Hospice of Aroostook.
There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Presque Isle at 10:00 am on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, with Father David Raymond as celebrant. There will be a spring interment at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Social Action, P.O.
