Houlton’s Dewey DeWitt will be inducted into the Maine Broadcasting Hall of Fame on Oct. 20 during the 2012 News and Creative Awards Dinner at the Hollywood Casino in Bangor.
DeWitt was confirmed by the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Broadcasters.
“This honor was bestowed by your colleagues in recognition of your contributions to Maine broadcasting,” said the MAB press release.

In a County Face article, DeWitt explained his broadcasting career happened by chance, but he was thankful for the breaks.
DeWitt was the voice of high school sports — basketball and football — on WABM radio, along with WEGP and television stations WAGM and MPBN. He also broadcast hockey and soccer on MPBN as a simulcast to radio.
“I am proud to be the first one to do a statewide telecast of a sporting event back in the late 1950s or early ‘60s,” said DeWitt. He has announced more than 3,000 athletic contests during his career, along with special events. He got to be good friends with Red Auerbach and played golf with Bob Cousey and Bill Sharman on different occasions.
DeWitt retired from broadcasting in 1983.
“It was quite a career,” he added.
Nowadays, DeWitt hosts a radio show on WHOU/WBCQ called “Around Town.” He is widowed from his second wife and has four children, Gary, Sally and Robbie from his first marriage and Randy from his second. His sister Barbara McGuire and her children and extended family live in the area.
“Hi everybody. This is Dewey DeWitt.”
