Island Falls’ ever-popular ‘Pie Run’ this Saturday

sp-runevents-dc2-pt-31AUCTION TIME — After the pies are handed out in the winning categories of the Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run/4K walk, an auction follows, as folks bid on the delectable pies and desserts that remain to benefit the Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
    “It hardly seems possible that the Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run/4K walk has been going for 20 years,” race director/organizer John Walker said. “People come from everywhere to compete in this race. A race that has been dubbed the ‘Pie Run,’ due to the fact that in lieu of ribbons/trophies, winners receive their choice of delicious homemade pies/desserts.”
    The race, Aug. 4 starts at 9 a.m. for both runners and walkers. Prior to that (at 8:45 a.m.) is a fun run of a half mile for those age 9 and under. In addition to prizes in all age categories, even over age 70, there are more than $1,000 in door prizes from generous local businesses from the southern Aroostook area.
    The first 100 participants will receive a special 20th anniversary Island Falls Summerfest T-shirt.  Registration may be made in advance ($12) or the day of the race ($15). To enter the race, e-mail Walker at jswalkerinc@gmail.com for a race form or stop by the town office in Island Falls and pick one up for pre-registertration.
    Net proceeds from the race are split equally between the Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
    For those who have not participated in the “Pie Run”, take exit 276 off I-95 and go through town driving to the Island Falls Municipal Building. Please try to arrive by 8:30 a.m. There is a water station at the half-way point plus refreshments after the race.

Winners receive pies as trophies, while local businesses donate generously to the door prizes. An auction of  baked goods also follows the race to benefit the Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
    After all the prizes are awarded there is a terrific auction that follows, as folks really enjoy bidding on the delectable pies and desserts that remain. Whether a runner, a walker, or simply a supporter out for a good time, plan to come to the “Pie Run.”
