HOULTON — Meg York Scott, co-owner of Natures Circle Farm with her father Dick York, was the featured speaker at the Houlton Rotary Club Jan. 7. Nature’s Circle Farm is an organic vegetable farm, which produces mostly storage crops.

Dick York started the farm in 1996 planting just a few acres of mostly potatoes, and has now grown into a 300-acre farm. He wanted to do organic to preserve the soil best and it is healthier all around. He also envisioned that it would become more and more popular. Nature’s Circle Farm is MOFGA Certified (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association), and their seed potatoes are double certified.

This means the seed potatoes you buy from them have been certified to meet all required standards by two agencies: the state of Maine Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry as well as Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Certification Services (MOFGA).
Meg joined the farm part time in 2004 and wanted to diversify, As of this past year they produced 1,500,000 pounds of potatoes, 200,000 pounds of beets, 200,000 pounds of rutabaga and turnip, 100,000 pounds of squash, 50,000 pounds of carrots and 15,0000 pounds of onions.
They have grown tremendously and ship most of the products south although they are looking for local markets. They also work with University of Maine Cooperative Extension doing field experiments. For more information please visit their Facebook page or website www.naturescirclefarm.com.
