Aroostook Times
Railroad strike continues — The second week of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad strike sees little change in the situation. The striking employees remain strong in their demand for increased pay, while officials of the road keep right on hiring new men to fill places left vacant. The local potato market has been at a standstill.

Social notes — A whist party and ball given Monday evening under the auspices of the ladies of St. Mary’s Parish, was a grand success both financially and socially. The annual Gentlemen’s Night of the Fact and Fiction Club scheduled for Monday was postponed. Bryson’s Orchestra goes to Presque Isle today to furnish music for the Mooseleuk Club Ball.

A growing population — During the past twenty years, the trend of the birthrate has been steadily downward, a factor noticeable in both Europe and America. Yet, for the town of Houlton, the number of births increased steadily from 112 in 1900 to 242 this past year.
Reading on the increase — The number of books loaned at the Cary Library during the first month of 1938 totaled 5618 volumes, a gain of 500 over this same time period last year, and averaging over 224 loaned per day. Books are loaned for two weeks with the privilege of renewal, except in the case of late and very popular ones such as “Gone With the Wind.”

Ricker royalty — Eight candidates have been nominated for King and Queen of Ricker Classical Institute’s annual Mardi Gras. Queen candidates chosen are freshman Roseanna Henderson, sophomore Gail Currier, junior Carol Putnam and senior Stanley Wellington. Nominated for King are freshman Dana Wright, sophomore Ward Hand, junior Otis Smith and senior Bob Coperthwaite.
Public broadcasting for the north — An option has been acquired on a six-acre parcel of land on the north side of Mars Hill for use as a transmitter site, John W. Dunlop, general manager of the Maine Educational Television Network said Wednesday. This will be a big step forward in getting Channel 10 in Presque Isle on the air.

Business booms with grand openings — Stephen Wright, proprietor of Bill’s Saw Shop, awarded prizes during last week’s grand opening: a Toro power hoe, Donald R. Bates; a Jonsered bar, chain and hat to Lawrence Blake; a Husky bar, chain and hat to Reggie Dow and a Poulan maul and bar oil, David Thurston. Houlton Car Wash, on the North Road, celebrated their grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 30. Country Yankee, located at 91 Military Street, is observing its grand opening this week, offering a full line of grocery, meat and deli items.
